Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was a little girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay developed a social mindful by her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma to later direct the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash belonging to one of juries. In the course of her tasks, she became dissatisfied with journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
